I had a chance to check out the program on Vista. No problems except Vista does not support the help system. A printed version is available for ?20 including postage.

Dave,

I'm a bit surprised - though I've not messed with VISTA at all!

Did you use a "standard" VISTA, with all those new-fangled user-access-controls, and new security rules, etc, active? For example, I had reckoned that VISTA would cause problems - eg:
  - it would not tolerate data-files within the "Program-Files" folder,
  - the BDE would be problematic if it used the Registry to hold it's settings.

Dave,

Re the HELP system: there's a fix for that, from Microsoft I think - if you want it, I'll get the link for you.

Re BDE/P-C running under VISTA: I reckon I've covered this point in older posts here... sometimes, VISTA will automatically make a private copy of a DB, in the user's private folders (as far as VISTA is concerned!), and the user will then update THAT copy of the DB. In your tests, you might check that your REAL DBs are being updated, and not a mysterious copy elsewhere...

I only had Vista for a night, so cannot answer most of you queries.

No probs, Dave.

Based on some serious testing that other BDE folks have done under VISTA, I think that:
  1. Some changes will be needed to get the BDE app too run properly, with ACL switched off!
  2. Even more changes will be needed to get it to run with ACL on, as will be the norm for most VISTA PCs.

Without remembering the exact config changes although I seem to remember not many we have been running solo on vista for approx 8 months now with no new surprises or issues that hadnt already been apparent on XP.

It was a bit of an express deployment and a good advert for a UPS (which we now have from APC) .
